A Guide To Cave Tours in Mammoth Cave National Park

The longest cave system in the world with 426 miles of mapped passageways (and counting), Mammoth Cave is truly a world unto itself. Named a national park in 1941, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, an International Biosphere Reserve in 1990, and an International Dark Sky Park in 2021, its list of accolades is both long and deserving.

I’ve experienced every cave tour available in the park and compiled a brief summary of each below. You’ll also find links to detailed overviews that include step-by-step walkthroughs, historical insights, stories, photos, and more.

Mammoth Cave Map

Of the 426 miles of Mammoth Cave, 14 are open to the public, largely facilitated through ranger-guided tours. The map below illustrates the passageways open for public exploration.

Tours also vary by season, so it's best to refer to the park's website to find the options available during the desired time frame. Flash photography and the use of a tripod or monopod is prohibited during all cave tours.
