Snow Covered Beauty: Winter Hiking the Tree Farm Trail in Cuyahoga Valley

The Tree Farm Trail in Cuyahoga Valley National Park is one of the best winter hiking options in Northeast Ohio, offering a peaceful and scenic experience when snow blankets the valley. In winter, the mostly flat trail becomes a quiet corridor of snow-covered fields and features an amazing stretch of pine trees that feels especially serene in the colder months. With fewer crowds and easy footing on packed snow, winter hiking on the Tree Farm Trail is ideal for all skill levels. Open views, crisp air, and beautiful sunrise light make the trail a standout for CVNP winter hiking, showcasing a calm and underrated side of the park.

Hiking the Tree Farm Trail

After a long day of work, there are few better ways to unwind than getting outside for a quick hike, and with about an hour of daylight left, the Tree Farm Trail in Cuyahoga Valley National Park seems the perfect choice. The scenic loop is one of my personal favorites in CVNP, and it also happens to be where Heather and I had our second date—memories that come back every time I get out onto the trail. From the Tree Farm Trailhead, I head out clockwise, saving my favorite section for the end of the hike. The trail begins along the eastern edge of Horseshoe Pond, frozen solid after weeks of bitter winter temperatures, before slipping into a quiet stand of mature pine trees.

In winter, the Tree Farm Trail doubles as a popular route for cross-country skiing, and fresh ski tracks line much of the path. I stick to the side of the trail to preserve the tracks, moving through alternating sections of evergreen forest and leafless hardwoods. Around the 0.7-mile mark, the trees open up to the north, offering the first glimpse of Heritage Farm’s Christmas tree fields. A short distance later, just before a gentle climb, another opening in the trees provides an even better view of the rolling fields beyond.

At the top of the rise, the landscape opens completely, revealing what feels like endless rows of Christmas trees stretching across the valley. The spot is especially stunning at sunrise, but even in the fading afternoon light, patches of blue sky and a hint of sunshine makes the view well worth the stop.

From here, the trail continues its rhythm, weaving between evergreen groves, mixed hardwood forest, and open stretches that feel like green tunnels during the warmer months.

Around mile 2.1, I reach my favorite section of the hike and one of my favorite places in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Towering pine trees line the trail as the last light of day filters through the canopy, casting a warm glow on the trunks below. It’s one of those places where photos never quite capture the magic—seeing it in person, especially at sunset or early morning, makes the hike.

The final stretch alternates once more between hardwoods and evergreens before looping back to the trailhead at 2.8 miles. As I finish the hike, I’m reminded why the Tree Farm Trail is one of the best easy hikes in CVNP, especially in winter. Spring isn’t far off, and I know I’ll be back—hopefully with Heather—returning at sunrise to relive one of our early adventures together.
