Hiking to Fishercap Lake in Glacier National Park is one of the easiest ways to experience the spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife of the Many Glacier area. While the hike is extremely short compared with many of Glacier National Park's famous trails, Fishercap Lake has developed a reputation as one of the best places in the entire park to see moose. The shallow lake sits in the Swiftcurrent Valley beneath the towering mountains of Many Glacier, and its marshy shoreline and aquatic vegetation create excellent moose habitat.

Hiking to Fishercap Lake
The hike to Fishercap Lake begins near the west end of the Many Glacier area, using the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail. Parking can be found behind the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn where a several hundred capacity lot waits.

From the trailhead, the route heads west into the Swiftcurrent Valley on a wide and relatively level trail. Although the surrounding mountains make this feel like the beginning of a major backcountry adventure, Fishercap Lake is only a short walk away.

Roughly a quarter-mile from the trailhead, watch for a side trail leading left toward the lake. A small sign indicates the lake below, but it's easy to miss. Follow this path through the trees and down toward the shoreline. Depending on the exact route and access point used, the walk to Fishercap Lake is generally around 0.3 miles one way, with very little elevation gain, making it one of the easiest hikes in the Many Glacier area.

Despite its small size, Fishercap Lake occupies an impressive setting. The lake is only about 0.2 miles long and 0.1 miles wide, with estimates placing its surface area at roughly 12 acres. Swiftcurrent Creek flows through the lake as it makes its way down the valley, and the relatively shallow water and vegetated shoreline help create the habitat that attracts moose. Mount Wilbur rises prominently to the west, while Swiftcurrent Mountain and the high ridges surrounding the Swiftcurrent Valley help form the dramatic mountain backdrop. From the shoreline, these rugged peaks rise thousands of feet above the valley, giving Fishercap Lake scenery that feels far more remote than its short distance from the trailhead would suggest.

For many hikers, however, the real reason to visit Fishercap Lake is the wildlife. Moose frequently travel through the Swiftcurrent Valley and are particularly attracted to wet areas, lake shores, willow flats, and aquatic vegetation. While seeing a moose is never guaranteed, Fishercap Lake offers one of the better opportunities in Glacier National Park. Moose may appear along the shoreline, wander through the surrounding vegetation, or wade directly into the shallow lake to feed on aquatic plants.

The best times to see moose at Fishercap Lake are generally early in the morning and during the evening hours, particularly around dawn and dusk. These quieter and cooler portions of the day tend to provide the best opportunities for wildlife viewing. If seeing a moose is one of your primary goals, consider arriving shortly after sunrise or returning roughly an hour or two before sunset.

Binoculars can be particularly useful at Fishercap Lake because wildlife frequently appears along the opposite shoreline. Moose are the stars here, but they are far from the only animals that inhabit the Swiftcurrent Valley. Deer, beavers, black bears, and grizzly bears may also be encountered in the surrounding forests, meadows, and wetlands. This is prime bear country, so hikers should carry bear spray and know how to use it even though Fishercap Lake is close to the developed portion of Many Glacier.

Once at Fishercap Lake, take some time to explore the view rather than immediately turning around. The calm water can produce beautiful reflections of the surrounding mountains during the morning and evening, especially when winds are light. Early morning is particularly appealing for photographers because the lake is often quieter and the low-angle light can illuminate the mountains surrounding the Swiftcurrent Valley.

Fishercap Lake is also an excellent choice for visitors who want to experience Glacier National Park's wildlife without committing to a strenuous hike. Many Glacier is filled with demanding trails leading high into the mountains, but Fishercap Lake delivers beautiful scenery and exceptional wildlife-viewing potential after only a short walk. Families with children, photographers carrying heavy camera equipment, and visitors looking for an easy morning or evening outing can all enjoy the lake without spending most of the day on the trail.

For the best experience, consider making Fishercap Lake either the first or last hike of the day in Many Glacier. An early-morning visit provides excellent odds of encountering active wildlife while also allowing hikers to enjoy the lake before the area becomes busier. An evening visit can be equally rewarding as temperatures cool, shadows stretch across the Swiftcurrent Valley, and moose begin moving toward the water to feed. Bring binoculars, keep your camera ready, remain quiet near the shoreline, and give all wildlife plenty of space.
