Hiking the Dogwood Trail

The hike begins from the Shadowfield Area parking lot along Sand Run Parkway in Sand Run Metro Park. The small lot can accommodate roughly 20 vehicles and typically only fills on busy weekends. From the parking area, look for the unmarked trailhead at a break in the trees to the right, where the Dogwood Trail immediately disappears into the forest.

Don't expect much of a warmup. The Dogwood Trail wastes little time gaining elevation, tackling two steep climbs within the first 0.4 miles. The first is especially challenging after rain, when the dirt trail can become slick, muddy, and difficult to navigate. If the area has recently received heavy rain, it may be worth giving the trail a day or two to dry out. In terms of sheer steepness, these opening climbs rival—and arguably exceed—just about anything found along the trails of nearby Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Before reaching the half-mile mark, the trail finally levels out, transitioning onto a compact, sandy path that winds through mature hardwood forest. Towering trees shade much of the route, while younger saplings fill the understory. Sand Run Metro Park's forests and ravines support an impressive variety of plant life, and depending on the season, hikers may encounter everything from ferns and hemlocks to trillium, trout lily, bloodroot, and other spring wildflowers.

One of the best aspects of hiking the Dogwood Trail is that it rarely feels repetitive. Long, straight stretches are almost nonexistent. Instead, the path constantly twists through the forest, rolling up and down hills, skirting ravines, and revealing slightly different scenery around nearly every bend. It's a surprisingly rugged landscape considering the trail sits just minutes from the heart of Akron.

Hiking the loop clockwise, around 0.7 miles in, the forest suddenly opens into a large, west-facing meadow filled with seasonal grasses and wildflowers. The change in scenery is one of the highlights of the hike, and the meadow's western exposure also makes it a surprisingly good place to catch the sunset. It may not quite rival nearby Prather Vista along the Missing Link and Prather Trails in Cascade Valley Metro Park, but when the conditions are right, it certainly holds its own.

Beyond the meadow, the Dogwood Trail slips back beneath the forest canopy and begins a gradual descent toward the Sand Run valley. Along the way, the path traces the edges of several wooded ravines, twisting and turning across rolling terrain. Depending on who you ask, this may be the most scenic portion of the entire loop, particularly when spring wildflowers cover the forest floor or fall colors transform the surrounding hardwoods.

Eventually, the trail draws close to Sand Run Parkway, where the final portion of the hike alternates between three relatively flat stretches and two modest climbs. After everything encountered earlier, neither incline feels particularly intimidating. Near the end of the loop, the trail dips downhill one final time, and roughly 100 feet later, hikers emerge from the woods back at the Shadowfield Area trailhead.

Overall, the Dogwood Trail is well worth the time and effort. Despite its short mileage, the constant elevation changes and surprisingly steep opening climbs make it one of the more challenging short hikes in the Akron area. Hikers with mobility limitations or those looking for an easy nature walk may want to consider one of Sand Run Metro Park's gentler options instead. For those looking for an easy workout, however, Dogwood delivers plenty of challenge in a relatively small package. Its rolling terrain, constant twists and turns, and connections with other trails in Sand Run Metro Park also make it one of the area's better trail-running routes and an easy hike to extend into a longer outing.
