Hiking the Oxbow Trail

Hikers begin at Cascade Valley Metro Park's Overlook Area, where a larges parking lot along Sackett Avenue accommodates approximately two dozen vehicles.

From the trailhead, the loop follows a paved path that winds through a mature forest of oak, maple, and sycamore.

After just a quarter mile, hikers reach the trail's centerpiece: the Overlook. Perched 125 feet above the valley floor, the overlook offers sweeping views of the Cuyahoga River and the surrounding Cuyahoga River Valley. While the scenery is impressive throughout the day, sunrise is when this viewpoint truly shines. As the sun climbs above the horizon, its light illuminates the treetops and fills the valley below, making this one of the best sunrise spots in the Akron area.

From the overlook, the Oxbow Trail leaves the paved path and transitions onto a natural dirt trail. A short distance later, the trail descends to the valley floor via a series of staircases before reaching a grassy clearing and the Oxbow Picnic Area. The section of the hike leading up to the picnic area can become muddy after rainfall and is often buggy during the warmer months, so hikers may want to wait a day or two after heavy rain for the best conditions.

Beyond the picnic area, the trail winds back into the forest before reaching one of the most peaceful stretches of the hike along the Cuyahoga River. Several unofficial side paths provide access to the riverbank, with the fourth spur (hiking counterclockwise) leading to a particularly scenic spot that's perfect for relaxing or enjoying a picnic beside the water.

Continuing along the loop, hikers arrive at the park's official picnic area, where more than eight picnic tables and charcoal grills sit just steps from the river's edge. It's an excellent place to take a break, enjoy lunch, or simply soak in the scenery of the Cuyahoga River.

After leaving the picnic area, the trail reenters the forest one final time and climbs steadily from the valley floor to the rim of the gorge by way of a series of steep staircases. Once back on top, it's less than a quarter mile to the overlook and another quarter mile to the trailhead.

Although the overlook is undoubtedly the highlight of the hike, the Oxbow Trail offers much more than a scenic viewpoint. With peaceful forest scenery, river access, picnic areas, and a rewarding mix of terrain, it's one of the best short hikes in Akron and one of the top hikes in Cascade Valley Metro Park. Pair it with the nearby Prather Trail and Missing Link Trail—widely considered among the best sunset hikes in Akron—for a memorable day exploring one of Summit County's most scenic parks.
