Hiking the Prather & Missing Link Loops
The hike begins from the Oxbow Area of Cascade Valley Metro Park, where a large parking lot, restrooms, the Crooked River Shelter, and a trailhead kiosk mark the starting point.

From the parking area, follow signs for the Missing Link Trail, a wide gravel path that quickly enters an open, prairie-like landscape. Although the park sits just minutes from downtown Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, the broad valley feels surprisingly remote, with only the occasional overhead power line hinting at the city's proximity.

The Missing Link Trail gently winds through the valley with only modest elevation changes, making it an excellent hike for visitors of all ages and skill levels. Native grasses and seasonal wildflowers border much of the trail in spring and early summer, while pockets of woodland burst into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold each autumn. After serving as farmland, residential property, and eventually a golf course for decades, the land was acquired by Summit Metro Parks in 2016. With the support of local, state, and federal partners, park staff have since transformed the once-manicured fairways and artificial water features into a thriving natural landscape that supports a rich diversity of native plants and wildlife.

After completing the mile long Missing Link Loop, continue onto the Prather Trail, which offers a similar hiking experience as it meanders through a mix of open meadows and short stretches of hardwood forest.

Like the first loop, this section of trail is lined with seasonal wildflowers and offers peaceful views across the surrounding valley, creating a relaxing walk that feels worlds away from the nearby cities. So, where does the Prather Trail get its name? The story begins in 1948, during an era when segregation was still common across much of the United States. At that time, properties in this area were advertised as being available to anyone, regardless of race, and the Wheelock Cuyahoga Acres community became a rare example of an integrated neighborhood. Many families came here hoping to build self-sufficient homesteads away from the pressures of city life. Among them were Willie Mae and George Conrad Prather. In 2018, archaeological surveys uncovered the foundation of the Prathers' home along with artifacts that helped tell their story. Today, their legacy is honored through the Prather Trail, which winds through the very landscape they once called home.

As the trail nears its end, it reaches Prather Vista, a scenic overlook perched above a sweeping U-shaped bend in the Cuyahoga River. This is the highlight of the hike and widely considered one of the best places to watch the sunset in Akron. As evening approaches, warm golden light spills across the river valley, creating a spectacular display that makes timing your hike for sunset well worth the effort.

From Prather Vista, it's just a short walk back to the trailhead and the newly constructed Crooked River Shelter.

Before leaving, take a moment to enjoy the overlook behind the shelter, where a beautifully maintained picnic area provides one final opportunity to soak in the scenery of Cascade Valley Metro Park before heading home.

Whether you're interested in an easy afternoon walk, a family-friendly stroll, or one of the best sunset hikes in Akron, the Missing Link Trail and Prather Trail deliver. Pack a lunch or dinner, and make use of the picnic area near the shelter. You won't be disappointed!
